Ooops, missed one

We are now entering that part of the year in which reading other people's lists makes you realize that a dump-load of good music seems to have been released while you weren't paying attention and that maybe your top 10 is not the omniscient survey of 2013-ness that you thought it was. (if you did).

Anyway, I was listening to Mojo's free CD with their favorites on it, and I got all the way to the end before I said "What is THIS?"

And it was Low.

So, Sub Pop, you send me Thumpers but not this? Don't you like me any more?

Like angels...

I asked about reviewing the new Trentemoller at Blurt, and got shot down, which is fine, I got a bunch of other good stuff, but nothing quite as ethereally gorgeous as this cut, "The Dream" which is sung by Low in that tight, trembly harmony that they do, which just sort of picks you off the ground and floats you away.

Anyway, very pretty. There are some other really interesting people on this album -- Jana Hunter of Lower Dens, Sune Rose Wagner of the Raveonettes, Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead, Marie Fisker and Ghost Society. It's out September 24 on In My Room.

I didn't blog yesterday because I was to the wall with work stuff, and also because Blogger kept logging me out, but it seems to be working now. I'm doing pretty well career-wise now, but let's see what happens when Syria blows up or the Fed cuts its stimulus, probably right back to the toilet for financial writers. Anyway...let's enjoy it while it lasts.

Retribution Gospel Choir

Kind of a silly review of the second Retribution Gospel Choir, which I really, really liked, but maybe I did a few too many reviews that week. It’s up today at Blurt. Here’s the goofy part:

When Alan Sparhawk switches between Low and Retribution Gospel Choir, does he have to change in a phone booth? It's a fair question, because RGC's louder, wilder sound stands in roughly the same relation to Low as Superman to Clark Kent. It's not that the cape and the lack of glasses will totally fool you either, since there's plenty of Low's suppressed intensity tucked into the crevices. Yet there's a superpowered kick to this second in the series. Sparhawk and company (that's Steve Garrington on bass and Eric Pollard on drums) are leaping over tall stacks of Marshalls, and if they are not faster than speeding bullets, they are awfully damned powerful.

I put “Electric Guitar” on my last mix, too.
