Ty Segall

So, look what happens…I post a random video on my blog and all the sudden I’m reviewing the record, the self-titled Ty Segall record. This has also become my dancing around in the kitchen record at the moment and super, super, super fun.

Here’s what I said:

“Ty Segall is a one-man band. Not in the one-person, multi-tracked recording artist sense, but the old fashioned way. A drummer first, he sits behind an abbreviated kit, one foot on the kick drum pedal, the other pumping on a high hat with a tambourine attached. He can’t get too close to the pedals, however, because he’s got a guitar between his body and the drums, and he’s playing that, too. In fact, when he’s not using his strumming hand to slash out the rockabilly chords, he’ll sometimes reach over and slap the tambourine with his hand. He doesn’t seem to have a pair of drum sticks. Oh, and there’s a microphone dangling in front of him – probably not in the best of condition – to put the reverb’d echo onto his yelps, croons, howls and hiccups. “ More

There are some mp3s up at the record label here, including Ty’s “It” and a song by his other band, The Traditional Fools.

I read your review this morning I like it! I seem to drift off a bit towards the end of this album, most of it is awesome - full speed ahead!

And he does a Ramones cover that sounds like the Cramps. Thanks, Jen, I got this album after you posted the video, a dozen songs and two dozen minutes but what a great two dozen. I either like this a lot or love it, and am very amused that a guy who looks so emo is musically psychotic.

Yeah, I like that Ramones cover, too...that's towards the end isn't it? I'm not sure I was thinking that it sagged towards the end. It's pretty short, as Rob pointed out. Not much time to get bored.

Sag? Hell, it wouldn't last my drive to work (and no, much as it might make me want to drive twice as fast, if I could drive to work faster I already would). Which is to say, I think the first song might be the slowest thing on the album. Ty's a fucking nut, I think he should cover Roxy Music.

Hi Rob. Roxy Music...which?

You might like the Coachwhips, too...do you have any of that?

Loved the Epsilons... Looks like Ty has been keeping busy with several projects. I recently stumbled across a cassette from Charlie & the Moonhearts which he apparently produced. Good fuzzy garage rock :)

Remake/Remodel, something like that where Ferry does his Elvis Lugosi thing, seems like it could easily Elvis Interior instead, with Ty channeling everyone.

And no I don't know the Coachwhips.
