Really enjoyed the new Mikal Cronin...my review, up today at Blurt.
MCII
Mikal Cronin
Merge
BY JENNIFER KELLY
Mikal Cronin’s second album filters the lyrical melancholy of confessional pop through a joyfully dissonant, dirt-crusted lens, winding fuzz-frayed guitar lines through sunny miasmas of overtone, threading triumphant melodies through hedge-rows of strident strumming. Sounding at times like his garage pop collaborator Ty Segall, but more often like power pop icons Brendan Benson, Jason Faulkner and the Flamin’ Groovies, Cronin has recorded the beach-and-pool-and-driving-with-the-windows-down album of the summer. MCII is an immediate rush and a lasting pleasure.

Mikal Cronin' MCII
This new album from Mikal Cronin (who is Ty Segall's bass player and songwriting partner) is awesome, way more power pop than Ty's stuff...reminds me of Brendan Benson and Jason Falkner (who I love, so there). I asked somebody if I could review it, either Dusted or Blurt, but nobody's getting back to me, so it looks like I might get to listen without thinking too hard about it.
Want to hear the single? Sure you do.
The album's out on Merge on May 7th.

Ty Segall, Mikal Cronin, Pink Floyd...what's not to love?
In the Red is reissuing Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin's 2009 vinyl-only Reverse Shark Attack in late January...and it's a hella good time, highly recommended if you didn't catch it the first time. (Cronin is a mainstay in Segall's band now and kind of a co-writer on the really excellent Slaughterhouse.) The originals are terrific, but they really got my attention with this cover, from one of my all time favorite albums, the Syd-enhanced, acid-wreathed Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Sorry I've been off and on with the posts. I've been having some motivational problems, plus this college/financial aid application process is kind of all-encompassing. Be glad when it's over.

Mikal Cronin
I've been seriously digging the upcoming album from sometime Ty Segall compadre Mikal Cronin. It's a lot like Ty's work, fuzzy, rough and melodic, like a Beatles song viewed through a really cracked, really dirty mirror.
The money track appears to be the one called "apathy," here courtesy of Pitchfork, enjoy...
I'm going away to NYC for a few days, for the Fringe Festival and to see some friends and eat well. I'm not bringing the laptop, so will probably not be posting, though I'll have email if you want to say hi.
